The city of Le Havre is located in a region called Haute Normandie in the country of France. Le Havre is in the north west of the country, to the right of the River Seine's mouth along the English Channel. Le Havre hotels have the same rustic, charming looks as the rest of the buildings in this city, but with all the modern facilities one might need or want such as concierge services or even conference rooms if you want to have business meetings in the area.
There are lots of interesting historical sights to see in this city. Le Havre Cathedral is one of the more well known examples. The Cathedral is Roman Catholic and was originally a parish church during both the 16th and 17th centuries. The main building is Baroque and the bell tower dates back to the 16th century, from about the year 1520.
For art lovers, the Museum of Beaux-Arts André Malraux is a must see. This museum is home to a vast collection of artwork which spans more than 5 centuries and the collections of impressionist paintings are one of the largest in France, aside from the paintings housed in Paris' Orsay Museum. The artwork in the museum in Le Havre includes Claude Monet's paintings as well as work from other artists who worked and lived in Normandy. A number of the paintings are from, Alfred Sisley, Raoul Dufy, Georges Seurat, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Gustave Courbet, Eugène Delacroix and Eugène Boudin. A visit to this museum is the perfect way to spend an afternoon for those who love the Impressionist era.
Le Havre has lots of parks and green areas to relax in. The Montgeon forest is free to visit and spans over 200 hectares of forestry as well as 30 hectares of meadows and lawns. Here you will find the "Maison de la Forêt" or House of the Forest, as well as a tropical, lush greenhouse which is open to the public in the mornings throughout the weekdays and in both the mornings and the afternoons during the weekends. Here you can use the lake to take a boat ride, or simply soak up the scenery and the sun whilst lying on the grass.
The Rouelles Park is also free to use and covers about 150 hectares of gardens, woods, swamps and ponds. There are lots of walking trails laid out so you can explore the area freely. In one section of the park you can find an arboretum which contains 200 types of beautiful trees.
Le Havre also has something for those who love nature but are more fond of the water rather than dry land. The city has a sandy beach which stretches for 1.24 miles. The beach is just 15 minutes walk from the main part of the city. The marina in Le Havre is perfect for those who love water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, kite boarding and jet skiing. Due to the prevailing winds from both the north west and the south, Le Havre is somewhat of a hotspot for people who love water sports and so during the warmer months Le Havre hotels tend to get quite hectic.
Due to its coastal location and marina, Le Havre has always been welcoming of foreign influences, particularly in the area of gastronomy.
